At Sanctum Organics, we love crafting skincare that cares for you, the world and all those who call it home. This Veganuary, we celebrate compassion and sustainability through our Certified Organic, vegan, and cruelty-free products.
So, what does that mean, and why is being Vegan and Cruelty Free so crucial for a skincare brand?
Let's break it down.
What Does "Vegan" Mean in Skincare?
Vegan skincare means that our products contain no animal-derived ingredients. And yes, Nonna, that includes salami and other more obvious ones like beeswax, lanolin, and collagen. However, it also includes less-obvious ingredients such as carmine (derived from insects and used as a pigment) and keratin (a well-known protein to strengthen hair and nails, which is sourced from animal by-products).
At Sanctum, we use powerful plant-based alternatives to nourish and protect your skin and hair – like hydrating Certified Organic Aloe Vera Leaf Juice and restorative plant oils and extracts.
So, what does it mean to be Certified Vegan?
Being Certified Vegan goes beyond avoiding animal-derived ingredients – it's a formal guarantee that ensures every aspect of our products meets strict vegan standards. The certification process verifies that we, the formulators and manufacturers, don't involve any animal testing or by-products at any stage of production. Being Certified Vegan means you only work with stakeholders who comply with these principles, and we are held accountable by an external organisation. It's easy to know if a brand is Certified, as we display the Certified Vegan trademark on our products and website.
What Does "Cruelty-Free" Mean?
Cruelty-Free means no animal testing has been conducted at any stage of creating products. From raw ingredients to the final formulations, animals aren't test subjects in our labs or in the labs of those we work with. We work exclusively with suppliers who share this commitment.
Like above, we are held accountable by a certifying body that thoroughly audits our processes, formulas and ingredients to ensure that at no stage do we involve any ingredient that has not been certified Cruelty-Free.
The Difference Between Vegan and Cruelty-Free
It's a common misconception that Vegan and Cruelty-Free mean the same thing. But they're not interchangeable terms:
-
Vegan focuses on the ingredients – ensuring that we don't use any animal-derived components in any product.
-
Cruelty-Free focuses on the process – ensuring that no harm comes to animals during testing.
A product can be Vegan but not Cruelty-Free, or vice versa. That's why, at Sanctum Organics, we commit to being both. Caring for animals is part of caring for the planet and ourselves. Why It Matters
